The Sunset Park BID changes its lamppost banners every few months to celebrate a season or an event. New banners are stored and displayed by Signmasters for Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, the Holidays, the Street Festival and the Summer Plazas. In order to hang the banners, the BID must apply to NYC DOT for a banner permit with specific pictures of the one we are using at that time.
We also have a sign with the BID logo on every lamppost within our district. These banners and signs hang as a continual reminder to our residents and shoppers that the BID is located on 5th Avenue and that the business and property owners care about Sunset Park by investing in the community and the shopping district.
Every few years, the Sunset Park BID produces a free shopping guide. The guide lists every business both alphabetically and within up to 3 categories, depending upon what service or product they offer. In order to create the most useful, up-to-date guide, the BID has a detailed database and continually checks the over 525 businesses located on our 26 blocks. The guide also gives information about the local elected officials and other local organizations. If you'd like a copy of our latest Shopping Guide, stop by our office any weekday during our office hours..
Sunset Park has a free local Spanish language newspaper called El Barrio News. The BID has a regular column in the paper, which we use to advertise specific businesses or events. Sometimes we give hints, advice or reminders. Through our great working relationship with Pedro Ortega, the editor, our events and projects are reported to the residents of Sunset Park.
Each holiday season throughout the year, Borough President Marty Markowitz, in an effort to boost sales for small businesses and to highlight the great resources in Brooklyn, pulls together the various economic organizations to advertise Brooklyn as a shopping destination. Brooklyn businesses are asked to offer special sales and promotions during that time. Those who agree to participate are listed and highlighted on the official website of SHOP Brooklyn. The day after Thanksgiving is an especially important date, which was renamed Brooklyn Friday (instead of Black Friday). Last year, Sunset Park BID had 5 businesses who immediately signed up. We took the “official” logo and added IN SUNSET PARK to make it more personalized for our community. Borough President Markowitz filmed a portion of his advertising campaign in one of our businesses, Ike’s Party Party.
