Re: Congresswoman Velázquez Helps the Sunset Park BID Keep 5th Avenue Cleaner.

The Sunset Park Business Improvement District is proud to announce that 102 new decorative Victor Stanley waste receptacles have been placed on every corner of 5th Avenue from 38th to 64th Street. These new pails are larger than the regular corner litter baskets and will hopefully hold more litter and thereby keep the commercial corridor cleaner.

The pails were purchased with Federal allocations which were made possible through the efforts of Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. The black, side-opening pails will be serviced and lined 4 days a week by the BID-contracted sanitation crew provided through JAG Cleaning and Maintenance. The other days NYC Department of Sanitation crews will be emptying them.

In the past, the design of choice allowed for household garbage and oversized boxes to be place on top of the pails, making them difficult to empty and too full for shoppers and pedestrians to use. It is hoped that this new design, which can be seen in Manhattan’s Grand Central Partnership district and other areas around the city, will discourage illegal use of the pails.

One of the missions of the BID is to create a better shopping atmosphere to enhance the economy of the area. This is our latest step in that direction. The BID has already received calls and emails expressing praise of the pails and the BID’s efforts.
