Where: OLPH Basilica (60th St, 5th Ave)
Every year, the BID shows off its holiday spirit with a tree lighting ceremony, a magic show, musical performances, and even Santa Claus himself!
As an official start of the holiday season, the Sunset Park BID, in cooperation with OLPH Basilica, holds a special ceremony on the street in front of the church, where an 18 foot tall tree has been placed. Santa shows up early and sits in front of the tree. Neighborhood children can have their picture taken with him, compliments of the BID. In addition to meeting Santa Claus, each child gets a goody bag of toys!
As the sun begins to set, chidlren from Sunset Park's local schools and organizations ring in the season in musical style. The BID provides a stage for the kids to perform on.
The children participating as well as the community always enjoy these fesitve perfomances. In previous years, we've listened to performances by The Brooklyn Chinese-American Children's Choir, OLPH Chorus, St. Agatha's School Chorus, and many other groups.
During the free concert put on by local children, a break is taken before the last performance. This is when the one and only King Henry comes on stage to wow the audience with magic and comedy! King Henry is a good friend of the Sunset Park BID and never fails to bring smiles on everyone's faces. He performs every year at our Tree Lighting ceremony as well as at our Street Fair in September.
When the sun is completely down, usually around 6:00 pm, the actual lighting of the 18 foot tree takes place.
Executive Director of the BID, and MC of the night, Renee Giordano, says a few words to the crowds. The President of the BID, any Board members, and any elected officials who are in attendence are also invited onto stage to speak. Finally the moment of thruth arrives, the countdown begins and then the tree is lit for the holidays! The Sunset Park BID Holiday Tree remains standing and lit up every night until Three Kings Day in January.
